Alpaca with Blue Faced Leicester Wool Sock Yarn
Somerset Sock Yarn in Madder
‘Somerset’ is an Alpaca and wool sock yarn. It is our own blend of 50% British alpaca and 50% Blue Faced Leicester wool. This is a soft, bouncy yarn without nylon.
This is a British-made yarn. We collected the Blue Faced Leicester fleeces from farms in Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales and carefully prepared them at Town End (it was one of our final batches of fibre sent off to be spun before we moved to Somerset). We combined this with white and coloured British alpaca fleeces which we painstakingly cleaned of hay and other bits. The fibres have been scoured, carded, combed and spun in Yorkshire. Most of the yarn is being knitted into socks by Arbon Socks, but we have plied some for hand-knitters.
Somerset Alpaca Sock yarn is available in its natural oatmeal grey and nine over-dyed shades which give depth to the yarn. The yarn was organically dyed in Yorkshire. A slight residue from the darker shades may come off on your fingers when knitting the yarn, but it washes off easily enough.
This yarn knits to Sock, Fingering weight or light 4 ply knitting patterns, (but always knit a tension swatch). There are approximately 400m per 100g. The yarn is sold in 100g hanks. If you would like us to ball your yarn for you, please make a note on the order.
Wash gently by hand or in the wool cycle of your machine with a small amount of non-bio detergent. Do not tumble dry. Some surface residue dye may come out in the first wash, particularly with the deeper colours.
